Drop In Thanks to all who supported the secondhand sale at the Drop In last month. The money raised and from the sale of hot cross buns has been donated to the Parish Hall. Barbara SpenceThe Drop In is held on Thursdays from 10 am in the Parish Hall. It used to be on until 12.30 serving jacket potatoes and soup on occasions along with tea, coffee and biscuits. When the Drop In started (date unknown) Common Ground had started running the October 21st Apple Day. There was a stall of fruit for sale outside the Hall. This Apple day started in 1990 so it is thought that the Drop In must have be running for nearly 21 years. Everyone is welcome to come along anytime. PSB
Many Thanks to all the litter pickers who helped make our village tidier. We filled nine bags of litter in an hour. The bulk of rubbish seemed to indicate that fast food containers will slowly inherit the earth. To counter the threat another clear up is planned for the autumn. Abi Hughes Edwards and Steve Manion on behalf of the Parish Council Great Mongeham Shotokan Karate Club Intermediate gradings were held at the club on 18th March, 2009 and the results were as follows: Orange Belts Sam Brookfield and Joe Edwards Yellow Belt Blair Brookfield Green Belts Levi Worsley and Bradley Hawkes Brown/Red Belt Israel Osmond The above students have worked hard over the winter, and deserve congratulations for their efforts. The club trains every Monday and Wednesday at Great Mongeham Parish Hall. However, please phone in the first instance as spaces are limited—367001. Dave and Jan Easton Thieves removed one of the wooden dedicated benches that stood beside the Parish Hall over night on Friday,17th April. This has been reported to the Police—if anyone saw anything suspicious please make contact. PSB
Sucata Run This Summer I am participating in a rather different kind of fundraising charity event. The event runs over the August bank holiday (27th- 31st) although we will carry on until September 5/6th. The event is called the 'Sucata Run' (Rouen to Cabo Da Roca) and involves driving banger cars through Europe. The cars have to be worth less than £250 so they truly are 'bangers'. We are writing to local companies to see if they will sponsor us in return for advertising space on the vehicle and a mention in any press releases we do. This is not an easy challenge,
none of us are mechanically trained or even minded! None of the team speak
spanish or portugese and even the small amount of french we can manage
between us is somewhat limited! Our vehicle was bought via ebay and although
it has now passed its MOT we have no idea how well it will run in the summer
heat or in the conditions we will put it under! We will aim to cover over
5000km in 10 days.

WHY we
are doing this!!! The UK based charity we are raising money for is called
Gemin-i.org and they work to improve education in over 90 countries around
the world. The money raised by the Sucata Run this year will be used to run
a project to raise the awareness of Malaria. Students from over 100 schools
around the world will be able to explore the topic using the case study of
Sierra Leone, where Malaria is the single biggest killer of children under
the age of 5.
They will explore the reasons why
so many people still die from Malaria and what is being done by humanitarian
aid agencies to prevent this. Every £1000 raised by the teams taking part in
the Rally will pay for 5 schools to take part in the project. The more money
we can raise, the more schools we can involve and the bigger the impact we
can have against the fight against Malaria. Many many thanks for taking the
time to read this and if you are able to help us raise sponsorship or
awareness we would really appreciate it Kristina Ledger of 9 St Francis
