DATES FOR YOUR DIARY in the Parish Hall

Beaux and Belles Wednesaday, 1st July at 7.30 pm in the Upper Room, St. Martin’s Church.

Singing leader, Lynda Borley is back from her holiday—why not come along and join us.

 

Great Mongeham Horticultural Society Wednesday, 1st July at 7.30 pm—Jackie Violet will talk on ‘Four Days at the Nursery’.  On the 4th July, combining with the Fun Day will be the Rose and Sweet Pea Show, plenty of entries please especially from village members of the club.

 

Saint Martin’s W.I  Thursday, 9th July at  7.30 pm in the Parish Hall—John Pearce will talk about  ‘Murder comes gift wrapped’ a most knowledgeable speaker on most police matters.

Members will have a stall at the Fun Afternoon.  Plants, books and answers to any W.I. questions.  Maybe a look at the 2010 Alternative W.I. Calendar.

 

Village Design Working Group Annual General Meeting will be held on Thursday, 9th July in the Upper Room of St. Martin’s Church, Great Mongeham at 7.30 pm.  All are welcome.

 

Great Mongeham Society Friday, 17th July meet at 2.15 pm at Canterbury Cathedral Gateway for visit to Archives Centre.

Marriage between Samantha Joanne Traynor and Matthew Edward Thomas Curry on the 6th June at 3 pm at St. Martin’s Church.  Mr. and Mrs. Traynor have set up home at 137 Forelands Square, Deal.

 

The funeral of Kenneth McCartney took place at St. Martin’s on Thursday, 18th June.

 Ken was a member of the St. Martin’s congregation and well known in the village.  He passed from this life at the age of 77 years at QEQM hospital, Margate on 4th June.

He was born in Edinburgh and  at the age of three moved with his family to Aylesham,

 where his father sought work in the local collieries and also became a lay preacher.  Ken was educated locally but at the age of thirteen tragedy struck when his mother was run over by an army lorry.  It was a long time before he got over the loss.

On leaving school he took employment in several locations at various factories.  He eventually joined the Royal Navy and served from 1949 until 1961 during which time he did several foreign tours with the Fleet Air Arm.  When he was demobbed he got a job with telecommunications in London.

Ken first met his wife Beryl nee Fowler at the Roxburgh Castle—it was not long before they were married on the 26th September, 1964 holding a reception at the now demolished Queen’s Hotel, Deal.  They were soon to set up home in St. Martin’s Road where they lived all their married life.

Ken worked at the local Marine Barracks for 21 years and for a time at what was Hutton’s Dairies, retiring in 1996.  He had plenty to occupy his mind.  He looked after the family graves in the churchyard, of which there are several, often mowing around them with a hand pushed mower.

Ken and Beryl enjoyed a good and happy time together and we thank God for his life and all that he has meant to us.                                                           

 

Derrick Long, a former chairman of Great Mongeham Parish Council, died in the Pilgrim’s Hospice on 10th June.  He lived with his wife Vi  in Cherry Lane and they had enjoyed 60 years together. Derrick worked for many years as a civil engineer for Dover District Council.

The funeral and burial service took place at St. Martin’s Church on Wednesday, 24th June conducted by the Rev. Peter Hambrook.                                                                                       DK

CLUB, SOCIETY AND VILLAGE REPORTS

Great Mongeham Horticultural Society The Club Barbeque and Potato weigh in took place at the Parish Hall with well over 80 members present. The BBQ was well organised by Alan Ford who proved he could cook as well as grow Super Sweet Peas and Daffodils!!  The weather was fine and it was great to see everyone on the village green chatting and watching the  ‘weigh in’.

We were hoping to see over 4 lbs from 1 seed potato and congratulations to Eileen Pitcher the winner with 4lbs 4 ozs.  There were over 80 entries.                                                                 JB

Great Mongeham Society Members enjoyed a talk by Mark Bateson, from Canterbury Cathedral Archives prior to their visit on Friday, 17th July.  Why not come along to the Society stand at the Village Fun Afternoon on 4th July.

Saint Martin’s W.I had a replacement speaker at their June meeting—’Growing old gracefully’  was the title.  Most members, who are of a certain age, were well schooled in this idea.  The other ages of the membership took notes for the future.

Great Mongeham Market Stall St. Martin’s Church held it’s first Market Stall on the Village Green on Saturday, 20th June.  There were a variety of goods for sale including Jams, Marmalades, Cakes, home made Bread, Vegetables, Plants and hand made Cards—and we sold out!  Some items were donated and others sold for the owner with a percentage going to the church funds.  A profit of £80.14 was made on what turned out to be a very enjoyable morning—plenty of chit-chat going on between customers and sellers.  There will be another market stall day on the Green on Saturday, 18th July , 22nd August and 19th September.  This is not a Boot Fair more of  a Farmer’s Market type of event and if it proves successful during the summer months it could be run throughout the year on the third Saturday of each month.

Guidelines for Sellers

Please bag up your items and label clearly with your name and the price.

Bring the produce to the village green between 9.45 am and 10.00 am on the day.

Collect your money and any left over produce by 1 pm.

St. Martin’s Church P.C.C. will operate the stall.  Please donate a minimum of 10 % of your takings to support the village church.

Great Mongeham Parish Hall There is a Keep-Fit for life, class every Monday morning at 10.30 am. The cost of the class is only £3.50 and it is mainly for the older age group but we also welcome all other age groups such as non working young mums.  It is informal and friendly but an excellent all round work out.

On Fridays we have Tots Ballet and Gymnastics for age groups 3 to 5  years.  A very popular class from 4 pm to 4.45 pm.  At 5 pm we have a class for special needs children from age 4 upwards.  Please ring if you would be interested in any of these classes.  I would love to hear from you.  Jan Anton    Tel. 01304 373421 or 07760150233 many thanks.

 

Dover District Council is no longer advertising planning applications in local newspapers.  As a courtesy Great Mongeham Parish Council have decided that, when any planning application is received, they will inform properties immediately neighbouring the application.     PS                

Steve Manion is a member of Great Mongeham Parish Council, Dover District Council and now Kent County Council.  I wonder will he stand for Parliament next year?

Robert Breau who used to live at The Manor House with his family, has received two copies of the VDS and wants to congratulate all those who produced the document, for a very well researched booklet.  One copy has gone to his daughter who lives in Germany.  Some people will remember him from years ago and he sends his best wishes to all in Great Mongeham.
