Mongeham 10.00 am Sunday School takes place every Sunday at St. Martin’s at the same time as the main morning services. The following poems have been received from family members in remembrance of the late Derrick Long who sadly died on 10th June, 2009. The life of one we love is never lost. Its influence goes on through all the lives it ever touched ……... They say memories are golden, well maybe that is true. We never wanted memories, we only wanted you. A million times we needed you, a million times we cried. If love alone could have saved you, you never would have died. In life we loved you dearly, in death we love you still. In our hearts you hold a place, no one could ever fill. If tears could build a stairway, and heartache makes a lane. We would walk the path to heaven, and bring you back again.

CLUB, SOCIETY AND VILLAGE REPORTS Village Fun Afternoon The afternoon lived up to its name especially as we were blessed with great weather. Thanks go to all who took part and made a truly joyful event. St. Martin’s Church and The Society were the main organizers with several stalls and sideshows raising money for their own funds. The generous donation of ice cream from Stephen Solley was much appreciated. Thanks goes to The Three Horseshoes for providing the beer tent and to South Court Garage for raising money for the Church. The Horticultural Society and the Art Club filled the hall with excellent exhibits. Everyone seems to agree we should carry on with this event if only to see the enjoyment of the children from the races. On my map the treasure was hidden under the caravan in the garden at Orchard House. BK Photographs kindly taken at the event by Maurice Greener and Terry Madgwick will be displayed on the village website—www.mongeham.co.uk
Great Mongeham Society The Fun Afternoon display was of interest to many people. Jim Rees and others did an excellent job of encouraging people to come along to the 15th October meeting. PSB
Great Mongeham Horticultural Society The meeting on 1st July started on a sad note when Chairman Keith informed members of the death of Derek Long, husband of Vi, a long standing member of the society. Condolences on behalf of the Club had been expressed to Vi by the committee. Speaker for the evening was Jackie A. Violet, a very apt name for the owner of a nursery. Although the talk was entitled ‘4 Days at the Nursery’, Jackie took us through a year in the Nursery from September onwards. In her very individual style, cataloguing triumphs and disasters along the way. She also brought plants for sale during the tea break. It was one of the hottest nights of the year so far which may account for one or two members finding the atmosphere a trifle soporific!! JB The annual Rose and Sweet Pea Show was another triumphant event for the Society said Show Secretary, Carol Whittaker—143 entries were on display and the result was a riot of colour and scent, despite all the worries with the weather during the previous weeks. Mrs. Keys-Evans who judged the Floral art expressed her delight at the number of entries, and was pleased to award Keith Atkinson the Special Prize for his beautiful Secret Garden. Ian Nash who judged flowers, fruit and vegetables commented on the very high standard achieved by the Club. Alan Ford deservedly won the trophy for his sweet peas, they were beautiful. Eileen Pitcher won the special award for fuchsias and also the trophy for the most points in the Show. Villagers were especially pleased to note that the special prize for Roses went to Vi Long. A great show, thanks to Keith and his committee. JB
Beaux and Belles have enjoyed their meetings throughout July—everyone was in fine voice! Lynda is back from her holiday and has plans for the group. Meetings will continue fortnightly throughout the Summer. VR
Saint Martin’s W.I enjoyed ‘Murder comes gift wrapped’ - John Pearce with slides took members and visitors through the 1980s. Members went to a strawberry tea at Pru’s - due to the very hot weather everyone went inside and admired Pru’s homemade picturesque quilts. The Village Fun Afternoon was enjoyed by members. Cakes, plants and books sold very quickly and it is hoped new members will come along on September 10th at 7.30 pm in the Parish Hall. Anhua Gao will speak about her experiences of living in China. Great Mongeham Market Stall There will be another market stall day on the Green on Saturday, 15th August and 19th September.
