CLUB, SOCIETY AND VILLAGE REPORTS Great Mongeham Horticultural Society held their first meeting of 2010 early in February and despite freezing weather over 60 members turned up to hear a fascinating talk by Messrs R. and N. Lawrence on vintage mowers and garden tools. They brought along many old forks, spades, shears and pruners, some over 100 years old and in marvellous condition. Many had been discovered in old sheds and garages. The Chairman for 2010 is Keith Atkinson, his wife Liz is the Secretary with Alan Ford as our Treasurer. Carol Whittaker is our Show Secretary. Meetings are held most months with 4 Shows during the year., the biggest being the Summer Show on August 30th. JB
Saint Martin’s W.I. The February meeting was cancelled owing to bad weather conditions.
Great Mongeham Society The Chairman and members paid tribute to Maurice Greener who died on the 11th February, 2010 at the Pilgrim’s Hospice, Thanet. A very full hall of members and visitors heard Dr. Reg Colman give an informative talk on Clementine Hozier who was born in Mayfair on 1st April, 1885. On 12th September, 1908 at St. Margaret’s Westminster she married Winston Churchill, more than a decade older and already a seasoned Parliamentarian. Together they had five children.

The Churchill’s marriage, in spite of the stresses of public life, was a close and affectionate one. During World War II she was Chairman of the Red Cross Aid to Russia Fund and the President of the Young Women’s Christian Association War Time Appeal. In May, 1965 she was created a life peer as Baroness Spencer-Churchill, of Chartwell in the County of Kent. She and her husband were one of the few married couples where both partners held noble titles in their own right. She died in Princes Gate, Knightsbridge, London of a heart attack at the age of 92. She is buried with her husband and three deceased children at St. Martin’s Church, Bladon near Woodstock in Oxfordshire.
Parish Hall There are some week day evenings available for hire—Thursdays 29th July and 30th December. Fridays 1st April, 6th August, 27th August and 24th December. Contact 01304 362815. PSB
Proposed Bus Stop Clearways A proposed Bus Stop clearway outside the Parish Hall, has caused much concern with hall users because the road is frequently used for parking when the small hall car park is full. If the proposal goes ahead it will be an offence to park within the marked bus stop, of 29 metres in length, and a Penalty Charge Notice may be issued. Dover District Council gave less than a month for comments to be sent to them and they did not inform the Parish Council of their intentions. Bus Stop clearways are also proposed in the village beside the post box in Mongeham Road and in St. Richard’s Road. B. Knight
Kent Highway Service is the part of Kent County Council that looks after the county’s roads, pavements and cycleways. Maintaining Kent’s streets and pavements is a vital and major task for the council. Kent has over 5,000 miles of streets and pavements, and over 100,000 street lights and other lit signs. In winter, ice and snow can make road surfaces more hazardous to drive on. They anticipate bad weather where possible, and take steps to keep roads open and safe. This involves a combination of salting or snow ploughing, and timely warnings to drivers. Grass verges and other planted areas by the roadside are known as soft landscape areas. They help to soften the harshness of a built-up area and reduce noise. One of our roles is to look after these areas.
Kent Highway Services have a 24/7 fault reporting centre that can be contacted on 08458 247 800. Any fault reported is put straight onto the highways computer system and is then sent to the relevant department for action. All faults are tracked and monitored to ensure that they are resolved within agreed timescales. This is the same number used by the Parish Council Clerk to report faults.
So if you have a street light that’s not working, a salt bin that needs filling or a pothole in a pavement or road please phone Kent Highways 08458 247 800 services direct, it will ensure the fault is put onto the system as soon as possible.
