The Funeral of Jackie Peatman of 1 Elder Cottages, Mongeham Road, Great Mongeham took place on April 19th at Barham. The following are extracts from her eulogy: Jackie was born in Liverpool Maternity Hospital weighing 8 lbs to proud parents Doreen and Ken. Over the following years, Jackie took a keen interest in horse riding and like Doreen entered many competitions and events. This interest continued well into later life and was always special to her. When Jackie was 14 she was lucky enough to spend 6 months living in Ghana, West Africa where her father Ken was working and relocated by his company Palm Line Shipping as an insurance assessor. Jackie, Doreen and Ken spent a fabulous time in West Africa enjoying what it had to offer especially from the eyes of a teenager. Jackie left home at 16 and with her good nature and kindness trained to become a nanny. In February, 1996 she met Ian and spent the rest of her life with him. After moving from Hampshire to Kent in 1997, the couple rented a small cottage by the sea in Broadstairs. Kent had so many childhood memories for Ian which he wanted to share with Jackie.

Jackie and Ian were like two peas in a pod, they could both be loving yet sometimes stubborn people. After three years in Broadstairs they decided it was time to move. Great Mongeham was the next location and Jackie just fell in love with the small village and nearby town of Deal with its little shops, where she began work at the supermarket Somerfield. Jackie was popular with working colleagues and as a result some became close friends. Many people were saddened by Jackie’s passing but remember when the sun is shining think of Jackie because she is always looking down and keeping a close eye on things. Jackie was born on 28th September, 1951 which just happens to be a Friday, and she passed away on 2nd April which was Good Friday. To be taken into the spiritual world on Good Friday where she will always be looked after—this makes her a very special person.
We would like to offer our condolences to Ian and her family at this sad time. PH
CLUB, SOCIETY AND VILLAGE REPORTS
Great Mongeham Horticultural Society The Hall was packed on April 7th for the Society’s Spring Show. Despite the unusually cold weather in January and February members still managed to find lots of lovely exhibits. A great display of Daffodils and the judges comments were very favourable. The cup for the most points in the Show went to Alan Ford who also deservedly won the Daffodil Cup for a magnificent display. JB
Saint Martin’s W.I. The booked speaker for April was unable to come so no chocolate! Ann, a Holistic Therapist stood in as her talk was postponed from February due to snow. The Annual Competition Cup was won by Gloria Hayman, President. PSB
Great Mongeham Society The last meeting was again well attended. Leon Williams talked and showed slides on Deal’s old architecture. It was fascinating and we will now notice the unusual features on buildings, especially on our Saunter around Deal meeting to be held on 19th August. An old Crayford Document was on view for members to see. Hopefully it will go into the Society’s archives. PSB
Parkinson Charity Dot and Carol thank everyone who came along or donated to the event held on Saturday, 10th April at the Cricket Club. Your kind support helped to raise over £400.
The Three Horseshoes Public House We will be having our Annual Charity Funday on 29th August and this year we will be holding it in aid of ‘Help for Heroes’. If you are able to volunteer to help either on the day or during the run up, please make contact with us. We are also looking for good quality auction items. We will be holding other events, in particular we will be taking part in this year’s Carnival Procession—any help would be much appreciated. For further information please telephone 01304 375812/07810 863 064 or email threehorseshoes@live.com Sam and Sarah Rodwell
