CLUB, SOCIETY AND VILLAGE REPORTS
Great Mongeham Horticultural Society It was a nice fine evening for the Gardener’s Annual Potato Weigh In and Barbecue and by 7.30 pm queues of people were snaking round the field clutching large black pots and awaiting their turn for their potatoes to be weighed. The Committee did their usual very efficient job and the speed with which they emptied compost (into Brian’s trailer, what would we do without him!!), found the potatoes (sometimes having to hunt very hard) and passed on to the ‘weighers’ who quickly recorded the result, was an example of streamlined accuracy. Then the members munched happily on the delicious barbecue produced by Alan and his helpers, which was greatly enjoyed. At the short business meeting which followed, the winner was announced as Nick Windsor with over 3 lbs in his pot. He got a loud cheer especially from the villagers when he went up for his well deserved prize. Four people shared the booby award—apart from their original potato, their pots were empty, they also had a loud cheer and a small prize. Chairman Keith thanked all for coming and asked for a show of appreciation for the amount of hard work that had gone on behind the scenes by the Committee and others. He reminded everyone that the speaker at the next meeting would be Radio Kent’s Steve Bradley, from the gardening programme and three days after that it would be the Rose and Sweet Pea Show—so no rest for the wicked—or gardeners!! JB Saint Martin’s W.I At the June Meeting Julie Thompsett, from the Wildlife Trust encouraged members to make an ‘insect hotel’ by using a cut plastic bottle, seed heads, cones, straw, sticks and other items for insects to over winter. The evening’s competition had a variety of wild flowers from ragged robin to plantain. Members organised a very successful Group Quiz on Friday, 11th June. St. Margaret’s WI were the winners and go on to the East Kent Final in October. PSB
Great Mongeham Society At the meeting on 17th June, retired Hovercraft pilot Brian Laverick-Smith gave a talk with pictures entitled ‘Thirty Years Bother on the Hover’. Brian enjoyed every moment he was there—even the scary times! The Village Fun Afternoon on Saturday, 10th July is being organised by Brian Knight and Peter Hambrook on behalf of the Society. There will be a display of the Society’s photos and artefacts. Many regular groups who use the Parish Hall will be closing for the Summer. Do check with your group organiser for dates of closure and reopening. The Thursday 10 am ‘Drop In’ will still be held in the hall until 11 am. Steve Manion, Counsellor, Dave Bish, Community Warden and PSCO, Liam Voller often call in for a cuppa and will help with any outstanding queries. PSB
Great Mongeham Shotokan Karate Club Our intermediate gradings were held recently and the results were as follows: Orange Belt—Shannon Hill. Green Belt—Sam Brookfield. Purple/White Belts—Oliver Coe, Blair Brookfield. Brown/White Belt—Gillian Walshe. Brown/Red Belt—Brandon Virtue. All these students have worked hard, and deserve congratulations for their efforts. The club trains every Monday and Wednesday at Great Mongeham Parish Hall from 6.30 pm. However, it is advisable to phone Jan (367001) in the first instance as spaces are limited. Dave and Jan Easton
