FORTHCOMING EVENTS  Great Mongeham Singers are taking a summer break during August and will meet again on Wednesday, 1st September.

The Macmillan Charity will hold a Craft and donation of items sale on a September Thursday during the Drop In, from 10 am in the Parish Hall—date to be arranged.

19th Great Mongeham Annual Art Exhibition The Friend’s of St. Martin’s Church are once again putting on the Annual Great Mongeham Art Exhibition and Sale.  The exhibition  will be held in St. Martin’s Church, Great Mongeham from Thursday, 30th September until Sunday, 3rd October, 2010 from 11 am to 4 pm daily.  There will be opportunities for all local artists to exhibit and for craftspeople to book table space to sell their creations.  For details and an entry form please contact Wendy Madgwick Tel: 239143.

CLUB, SOCIETY AND VILLAGE REPORTS

Village Fun Afternoon  We would like to thank everyone for making the afternoon such a success.  It’s always a pleasure to see the enjoyment the children get from the races and Jan’s Tiny Tots also had a good time.  The tug of war between the two village pubs was keenly fought with the Three Horseshoes taking the Joan  Flynn Trophy from The Leather Bottle.

Thanks go to the Deal Junior Carnival Court who enjoyed their time with us and gave us a special thank you for inviting them.  The dog show was in the capable hands of expert judge Daphne Lee, assisted by Vicky Keithley and the top dog prize went to Nick Windsor with Maisie.  Thanks also to all those who kindly donated prizes for the raffle and tombola.  These include South Court Garage, Capper and Son Butcher and the Horticultural Society.  Solley’s Ice Creams were a must on such a hot day—our thanks to Stephen.  St. Martin’s Church tea tent did a roaring trade but thankfully the St. John’s Ambulance were not overstretched.  The Rose and Sweet Pea Show and the Art Exhibition in the Parish Hall was a great attraction.

Money raised from the sideshows, run by the Great Mongeham Society, will go towards purchasing the historical document for the village, that was on show on the Society display.

The hall was kindly donated by the Parish Hall Trustees and the marquee by Great Mongeham Parish Council.                                            Peter Hambrook and Brian Knight—Co-ordinators

Great Mongeham Horticultural Society At the July meeting members welcomed Steve Bradley who presents the popular gardening programme on Radio Kent.  Steve concentrated his talk on vegetables and with the aid of a slide show, illustrated methods of growing different varieties of vegetables and ways of maximising available space.  It was most interesting and questions came thick and fast afterwards.

The Rose and Sweet Pea Show was held in the Parish Hall on the Village Fun Afternoon.  A goodly number of entries from 25 club members filled the hall with colour and scent.  It was a very attractive show and the judges expressed admiration for the very high quality and standard of the exhibits.  At the end of the afternoon the cup for most points in the show was awarded to Eileen Pitcher and the sweet pea cup to Alan Ford.

Saint Martin’s W.I  The July meeting was a very warm evening with bowls of strawberries and cream along with fresh baked scones and Bucks Fizz.  Members and visitors sat outside in the fresh air and enjoyed the evening with gentle music.  There was a good entry for the biscuit competition.  First place went to Marguerite Court.

Great Mongeham Society Members and visitors of all ages met at St. Martin’s Church  for the July Farm Walk led by Peter, David and Matt.  Everyone present enjoyed hearing about  the growing of oil seed rape, potatoes and beans.  Crops were examined for growth and any signs of bug infestation.  The potatoes were on target and being dug and sent to market the following day.  On arrival at the farm all those present enjoyed the chance of getting on board the latest tractor and combine harvester, with a full explanation of the Sat Nav equipment.  The walkers then adjourned  to the Parish Hall for refreshments.

Parish Hall AGM A successful meeting but only a couple of ‘public’ attended.  Everyone said the hall was well run, clean and appreciated by all users.  The committee work hard to maintain this standard.  Mike Blee gave the financial report, as he stood, a very loud crack of thunder sounded, all those present jumped and Mike covered about six foot in the air being by an open window at the time.  After hearts calmed down the business continued.  All Trustees and representatives are willing to stand for another 12 months.  At the finish of the meeting refreshments were served.

 County Councillor’s Report  With the warmer weather, our colleagues at Kent Highways have again stressed the need for landowners to keep vegetation from obscuring our highways.  It is the responsibility of the landowner to maintain these areas.  If vegetation from private land is causing a problem on a highway, we (Kent Highways) can ask the owner to cut, trim or remove the obstruction.  For example, an overgrown hedge affecting the pavement or branches blocking a driver’s view. 

This is part of what is known as soft landscape areas.  These areas are important.

Soft landscape areas need to be maintained so that:

roads, cycle paths and pavements are clear of obstructions,

drivers can see clearly at junctions and bends, to keep the road safe,

width and height clearances are maintained,

the pathways are safe to walk on and don’t get damaged by weed roots,

verges are kept neat and tidy

the area is attractive for local residents and visitors.

If residents locate a problem we would advise them to let the parish council know in the first instance.                                                                                                                   Steve Manion
