CLUB, SOCIETY AND VILLAGE REPORTS The Harvest Supper held recently in the Parish Hall was a great success. Both young and old enjoyed an evening of good old fashioned entertainment together with a meal. Many thanks to all the entertainers and those who came along to support the evening. A special thanks to the team who prepared and served the food. The profit for the evening totalled £447.67 which was shared equally between the Pilgrim’s Hospice and our friends in Madagascar. PH
Great Mongeham Horticultural Society The Autumn Show was held in the Parish Hall early in October with 21 members showing 170 exhibits. Roger Austin the judge said he was impressed with the exhibits despite problems caused by heavy rain a few days before. Bill Haynes won the Cup for the most points in the show and the Apple Cup was won by Mike Blee. |

Great Mongeham Society Members enjoyed an excellent talk given by Chris Pascal, showing slides depicting The Great Tower at Dover Castle. As one of English Heritage’s most ambitious projects for many years, the entire interior of Henry’s Great Tower palace has now been recreated. Historians, designers, artists and craftspeople have combined to present it as it might have appeared when newly completed, and ready to receive an important visitor, Count Philip of Flanders, in 1184. Among the most spectacular of the rooms is the King’s Hall, dominated by its canopied throne, decked throughout with wall hangings and recreations of contemporary furniture all brilliantly coloured. The vibrant colours of the Great Tower’s interiors, reflecting medieval reality rather than the fiction that castles were drab, uncomfortable and gloomy places. We are certainly very fortunate to have this excellent visitor attraction on our doorstep and it is well worth a visit.
The 2011 calendar of events was discussed and promises to be a very interesting and varied programme PSB
The Society would like to acknowledge with much gratitude the grant received from the Parish Council which enabled us to complete the purchase of the ‘Crayford document’, a most interesting piece of village history which otherwise would have been lost. Although the original must be kept securely, we are arranging to have a copy made to hang in the Parish Hall for everyone to see. We thank everyone who has helped with this project. JB
St. Martin’s W.I. At the AGM on 14th October, members elected Gloria Hayman as their President for a second year. She will be supported by a full committee. A quiz was set for the social time. Christmas decorations will be up in the Hall for all of December to brighten up your meetings. Thank you to the Parish Hall Trustees and Representatives for all their hard work. PSB
Great Mongeham Art Show The Friend’s of St. Martin’s would like to thank everyone who exhibited, helped, donated artwork and cakes, and supported the Annual Art Show in St. Martin’s Church and made it such an enjoyable occasion. With all your help, a profit of over £560 was made which will go towards the replacement of the rainwater goods for St. Martin’s. WM
In September we swapped our house in Cherry Lane with our friends in the Dordogne and had a lovely quiet holiday. Our friends on the other hand had a traumatic experience when their dog, Millie, took fright when walking through our field. A fox ran in front of her carrying a ginger kitten in his mouth hotly pursued by a distraught parent. The fox disappeared in one direction, Millie in the other. It took my friend Doug some time to locate her and this was only possible with the help of a kindly neighbour. If you lost a kitten it was, sadly, a fox’s breakfast. DK Calling all volunteers and volunteer-seeking organisations: the Big Purple Bus hits the Dover District!
