CLUB, SOCIETY AND VILLAGE REPORTS Great Mongeham Horticultural Society Our first meeting this year started on a sombre note as Chairman Keith asked us to remember our dear friend and fellow gardener Doreen Talling. She will be sadly missed by us all. Speaker for the evening was Steve Walker from Samphire Hoe who gave us an interesting and informative insight into his work and the continually unfolding plans for the Hoe. Slides, interspersed with his own idiosyncratic artwork, illustrated his talk, which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. First meeting of the year always signals the annual potato competition and most of us went home clutching a ten litre pot and one seed potato, hoping to confound the judges with our yield in June. JB
Great Mongeham Society At the February meeting, after a technical hitch Mike Burrows spoke about the life of Guiseppe Garibaldi from 4.7.1807 until 2.6.1882, an Italian military and political figure. Garibaldi travelled to many parts of the world including Tyneside. Many people know of him for the Red shirt his followers wore and the biscuit Garibaldi—these were served with the refreshments.
Have you visited the new Society website at www.greatmongehamsociety.co.uk Although the website aims to cover all aspects of village life it devotes a large part to village history, some of which may be of interest to family historians. The website is added to on a regular basis. Currently the mediaeval history of the village is being recorded, but we soon hope to start a series on the histories of individual houses in the village. JR
The cast of the Pantomime, Aladdin presented by the Ash Players were delighted with the Great Mongeham Dancers—they thought the children were outstanding both on and off stage. There were long gaps when the little dancers were not actually on stage and their behaviour during these breaks back stage impressed every member of the cast. The Director was so pleased with their performance that they have been invited back for next year’s pantomime production. In the meantime the dancers are now preparing for their Spring time exams - the younger ones will be taking classical ballet and the older ones, tap, acrobatics and jazz dance awards. Jan’s little dancers meet every Friday after School at Great Mongeham Parish Hall. For further details please telephone 01304 373421. JF
Saint Martin’s W.I. Brian Laverick-Smith gave an interesting and humorous talk with slides on 30 years ‘Bovver on the Hover’ which brought back memories for many of the members especially when the WI hired the Hovercraft for a trip to the Goodwin Sands. PSB
Get Well Soon We send good wishes for a speedy recovery to Deidre Jull who recently fell over in her garden and broke her leg.
