CLUB, SOCIETY AND VILLAGE REPORTS
Great Mongeham Horticultural
Society speaker at their March meeting was
Richard Reynolds who spoke about his achievements in 'Guerrilla Gardening'.
His talk and slide show were both interesting and enlightening, describing
his first attempt at improving a derelict piece of land and going on to
bigger and better efforts to 'beautify' our suburban surroundings, efforts
which have now spread to other countries. Fired by his enthusiasm I think
we all went home determined to do our bit to improve the environment.
Certainly the talk was well received and appreciated.

Saint Martin’s W.I. The meeting held on 10th March was fun and informative. A production line of bag making under the guidance of tutor Prue Bell let everyone have a hand in the work carried out. Some of the bags will be on sale at the Undercroft Stall on 24th September.
The Drop In hosted the Meningitis Trust Coffee morning on Thursday, 17th March. It was a pity more villagers could not come along. A good sum was raised to help with their good work. This serious illness was prevalent in the area few years ago. The Drop In is held in the Parish Hall every Thursday from 10 am. One very young visitor was very happy—she chose the Teddy Bear from the raffle and then received the doll for getting the name right—lucky girl!! Thank you to all who worked hard for this morning and those who donated items. PSB
Check with your group on the meeting times over the Easter and May Bank holiday weeks. The Village News in the Notice board outside the Hall lists the names and numbers of the group organisers.
Great Mongeham Hand bells Did you know that St. Martin’s Church has a set of hand bells? Did you know that there is a group of people who are keen ringers? (Ringing at Christmas and Easter time). These bells were acquired by the Church in 1923 at a cost of £6.18.0d. Peter Hambrook’s father was, amongst others, instrumental in raising the money for their purchase. Recently, a group of enthusiasts from St. Martins took the Bells back to their place of origin; The Whitechapel Bell Foundry in London. The last visit was in 1985, so the Bells are in need of attention. The Bells will be inspected, assessed and hopefully ‘serviced’. We await developments and the estimate for the potential work. New hand bell ringers, young or old, are always welcome—ability to read music is not required! For more information contact Audrey Pitchford, Tel. 01304 362202.
Comic Relief A real community effort was made by Jan’s Dancing Group on Friday, 18th March, when they raised over £50 in the Village Hall. Dancing in Boots with Brollies—the theme was ‘doing something funny for money’ - they had great fun ‘Singing in the Rain’ and everyone joined in from the tiny tots to parents and grandparents. The reporter from the East Kent Mercury came along to take some good action shots! JA
Snowdown Male Voice Choir made a welcome return visit to St. Martin’s Church on Saturday, 12th March. The evening was well attended and returned a profit of over £200 for the Friends of St. Martin’s Church. Thank you to all those who kindly organized and supported the event.
Parish Council Annual General Meeting This year’s meeting took place on Thursday, 3rd March in the Parish Hall. 14 members of the public attended to listen to reports from the Chairman of the Parish Council, Cllr. Terry Madgwick, PCSO Liam Voller and District Councillors Steven Manion and Nick Kenton. Cllr. Manion also gave a report on the activities of KCC. County Councillor Manion’s reports were followed by a number of questions from the floor and a lively debate took place concerning KCC’s proposed budget cuts, specifically the closure of Sampson Court and the increase in the price of the Kent Freedom Pass. This year’s meeting was held early as this is a Parish Council election year and the Council wished to inform members of the public of this fact and urge them to consider standing for election. Cllr Penny Swales gave a brief talk on the roles and responsibilities of a Parish Councillor. Closing date for nomination is Monday, 4th April, 2011. Nomination packs are available

The Three Horseshoes is under very good new management as you will see from the leaflets delivered with this newsletter. Karla Maskell has come from Maidstone and has already made herself known to many in the village by coming to the “Drop In” at the Parish Hall on a Thursday morning. Her premises were full to overflowing for her grand opening on the 19th March and she has a full programme planned for the future. She has had a new kitchen fitted and is now able to cater for events that will include O.A.P. lunches. Watch the pub notices for details. I’m sure, like me, you will wish her many happy years in Great Mongeham. Diana Knight
