Church Registers Funeral 30th March, 2011 Dorothy May Featherstone 1st April, 2011 Charles Frederick Gosden both late of Great Mongeham. Barham Crematorium 7th April, 2011 Leslie Walter Baker of Cherry Lane The following is the Eulogy read out at the funeral held on the 1st April of Charlie Gosden who died on 14th March, 2011. Charlie was born on 10 May, 1929 and lived with his parents, brother Stan and sisters Barbara and Joy in Faversham. It wasn’t long before they all moved to Great Mongeham and after leaving School, Charlie worked at Solley’s Farm and then the Colliery finally settling in the construction industry working at Richborough Power Station. For many years he was self employed and then finally worked for Denne builders before taking early retirement through ill health. During his life Charlie was called up for National Service in the Royal Artillery where he was posted to North Africa, Libya and Egypt and became a cook. His cooking was so good that he was asked to cook for the officers! Charlie met Kath when she was on a bike ride and caught Charlie’s eye and from then on the relationship blossomed. They got married in 1950 and had five children—David, Kevin, Carol, Tina and Deirdre. Charlie loved gardening and entering the Great Mongeham Show with his onions and did very well with them often winning first prize. His best mate and sparring partner over the onions was Roy Catherick and he missed him greatly when he passed away.
As Charlie’s eyesight deteriorated he had to give up his car which he really
missed but Kath and Charlie always looked forward to going out on Sundays
with Ronnie for breakfast or dinner. |

He was always first out of the door if anyone was going to take him for a Chinese meal—he really loved them. He had been a regular at The Good Luck in Dover for the past 42 years. Kath and Charlie would have been married 61 years—they had a good marriage and a loving family and friends. They have eleven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Charlie will be sadly missed by all who knew him. God Bless you Charlie and rest in peace.

CLUB, SOCIETY AND VILLAGE REPORTS Great Mongeham Horticultural Society The Spring Show on 6th April was enjoyed by members. The display of flowers, plants, fruits and vegetables against the black backcloths was most attractive. Daffodils, as we all know, have suffered badly from this year’s winter and spring so there were fewer entries than usual in these sections, but Alan Ford had managed to produce some beauties which earned him well-deserved prizes. The Judges, Jean and Peter Sidell were most helpful, not only explaining reasons for their choices but passing on valuable hints on improvements the rest of us could make!! Floral Art was judged by Mrs. Keys-Evans who was also very helpful. Barbara Odell won this section with her beautiful interpretation of ‘The Royal Wedding’. The trophy for the most points in the Show was awarded to Marlene Walker. At the close, Chairman Keith thanked Show Secretary Carol Whittaker and the Committee for another well staged and managed Show. He also thanked those members who had taken the trouble to produce entries, thus making the Show possible. JB

Great Mongeham Handbells Following the visit by a group of St. Martin’s Hand-bell Ringers to the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in February, the Hand-bells were left for inspection and assessment. A report on their condition has been received containing good and bad news. The bells are all said to be sound, although tarnished through use and age. However the Foundry recommends that work is needed to bring the Hand-bells back into ‘mint’ condition. This would involve renewing the leather handles and caps together with the inside mechanisms such as clapper pegs and spring felts. Staple pins and staple washers should also be cleaned, overhauled and adjusted. Our Hand-bell Group hope to have this work carried out, so that the Church may have the benefit of a superb set of hand-bells for the next 25 years! For those who might be interested in hand-bell ringing please contact Audrey Pitchford Tel. 01304 362202.

Saint Martin’s W.I. President, Gloria Hayman welcomed many visitors and members to the 38th Birthday celebrations. She introduced John and Sue Pearce resplendent in 1940 uniforms and they spoke about Glenn Miller from his early years to his disappearance. This was an informative talk with pictures. The competition was for a 1940’s outfit - Edna Cory won wearing a boiler suit, goggles and turban in a reprise of her wartime work as a welder. Good 1940 refreshments were arranged— including spam sandwiches, jelly and corn flour shapes. The annual competition award went to Hilary Maxwell for most points gained during the year. PSB Community First Responders are volunteers who respond to emergency calls on behalf of S.E.Coast Ambulance Service. They often arrive at life threatening emergencies before the ambulance can get there as they are just around the corner. We are looking to recruit new volunteers across the S.E. of England in order to set up or expand local schemes. Have you got a few hours each week to spare for this extremely worthwhile venture? Would you like to make a real difference to people in difficulty in your own community? For further details visit - www.dealfirstresponders.org.uk or telephone North and East Kent 07786313589
