CLUB, SOCIETY AND VILLAGE REPORTS Great Mongeham Horticultural Society At the July meeting members enjoyed meeting Patrick from the Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory. This is one of the very few independent Observatories in the country and the description of the work and research that goes on were most interesting. Patrick was not only an enthusiastic speaker, he was also anxious to answer questions and the end result was an inter-active discussion between us which was most enjoyable.

The Rose and Sweet Pea Show held during the Village Fete on 9th July, attracted some 138 entries who made a delightful display and both Show Secretary Carol and Chairman, Keith were pleased with another successful show. Although this has not been such a good year for roses, Marlene Walker produced some beauties, the Sweet Peas were excellent with Alan Ford winning the Percy Lawrence Cup. The floral art section was well supported and a special prize was awarded to Barbara Odell for her entry. JB
Great Mongeham Society
What a fantastic place! Sharing vehicles to the car park and the stunning
views of Dover harbour in the evening sun, eighteen GMS members ranging from
their teens to their eighties were introduced through an intimate tunnel
entrance, to the ditch that surrounds the Drop Redoubt and to its structure
and history by Paul Wells, the volunteer Treasurer of the eleven year old
Western Heights Preservation Society. Skirting the outer wall we penetrated
the building just as it began to rain and were handed torches to light the
efforts of our climb, through partial excavations to the meticulously
maintained wildflower meadows, that blanket the gun emplacements and parade
ground at the very top and then to illuminate our discussions during the
careful decent, all making for the most personal and perfectly atmospheric
tour. For further information on the Society visit the website at www.greatmongehamsociety.co.uk
9th July was the day of the Great Mongeham Village Fete and Rose and Sweet Pea Show. As with other years, various organisations put on a number of sideshows and attractions. The whole event was blessed with fine weather and fun was had by one and all. The Dog Show proved to be a popular event with several owners receiving rosettes in various classes. It was good to see the village stocks back in use after several years rest. The tea tent was as popular as ever with plenty of tea and chatter and a meeting up of old friends. The children’s races went down well as they always do and most children received a prize of some sort or another. The sweet peas in the flower show were up to their usual high standard and it was great to be part of such a fun and enjoyable afternoon.
Through the Great Mongeham Newsletter, I should like to say a big thank you
to those who gave up their time to make this event possible. While it is
still fresh in your minds, if anyone has any ideas for next year’s fete– to
be held on 7th July, 2012—do let us know. We look forward to seeing you
there.
PH
We welcome Gavin Lawrence and Sara Coote who have recently moved into Brewery Cottages - we hope they will both be very happy in our village.
