CLUB, SOCIETY AND VILLAGE REPORTS Great Mongeham Horticultural Society Bank Holiday Monday was the Society’s biggest day of the year, the Annual Summer Show combined with the Boot Fair on the green. Fortunately, the weather was kind and there were many visitors looking for a bargain and also viewing the exhibits of the Society’s members in the Parish Hall. There was a great display of Dahlias, pot plants, floral art, photographs, domestic items and wonderful vegetables. 43 people entered including 8 children. Marlene Walker bagged 5 trophies (a great achievement ) other trophies were spread between members and those non-members who had entered the open sections. The Show Secretary did a great job and the Society are grateful to David Solley for the use of his field for car parking and Peter Hambrook for marking out the boot pitches. JB

The Macmillan Cancer Care Coffee Morning held in the village hall on September 3rd raised £472. Thank you to all the helpers and those who supported the event. The money has been given to the local branch and will be used for the care of local cancer patients and their families. Dorothy Sharpe
Available grants One of the roles of your Parish Council is to provide small grants to organisations in the village where we consider they are for causes that will benefit significant numbers of residents. The Parish Council currently has a small amount of grant money available and we would like to hear from any organisation which would like to apply for a grant of up to £250. If you would like to apply, please contact the Clerk, Sarah Wells at 3 Gore Terrace, Gore Road, Eastry, Sandwich, KENT, CT13 0LS or e-mail her direct from the Parish Council website at www.greatmongehampc.kentparishes.gov.uk/ Please contact her by October 21st so that we can consider the applications at our meeting on November 3rd. Terry Madgwick, Chairman
Traffic calming As you know, following three accidents, your Parish Council consulted the village about the need for traffic calming at the entrance to the village on Willow Road. We were given overwhelming support and we subsequently arranged for traffic calming to be introduced there. We have now asked Kent Highways to carry out an objective study on whether the project, which was the only measure offered by them, has reduced the speed and volume of traffic entering the village.
However, we would also like to have a subjective assessment from you , the villagers, on the traffic calming. Do you think it has had a positive impact on either the volume or the speed of traffic as it enters the village? Do you think that the double yellow lines round the bend have helped the situation or caused problems? What about the additional signage as you approach the village? Overall, do you think this was a project worth doing? Whatever your views, positive or negative, we would like to hear them as they will help us and Kent Highways in planning similar projects either here or in other villages.
To give your feedback please go to the Council website at www.greatmongehampc.kentparishes.gov.uk and click on Message Centre; bottom of the contents section on the left hand side of the Home Page. Alternatively you can e-mail gmonpc@btinternet.com or write to Clerk to the Parish Council, 3 Gore Terrace, Gore Road, Eastry, Sandwich CT13 0LS. Terry Madgwick, Chairman

Finally, after long periods of negotiation and discussion the new waste service is being rolled out across the district. The new service gives an expanded recycling provision while providing the service at a cost saving to both the Dover District Council as the waste collection authority and to Kent County Council as the waste disposal authority.
The new recycling and waste collections start from 19 September, with new containers provided to households as the service is rolled out across the area. The new service includes the introduction of a weekly collection of all food waste, together with an improved recycling collection service that will take plastic packaging like yoghurt pots, ice cream tubs and food trays, not just plastic bottles. Dover District Council is providing residents with new containers for food waste, and wheeled bins for the collection of a greater range of recyclables and for the fortnightly collection of the waste that householders have not been able to recycle.
DDC is able to offer the new service thanks to a ground-breaking partnership with Shepway District Council and Kent County Council, which means the partnership can deliver improved recycling, and multi million pound savings for the future.
Nick has been leading on this for the Council and told the local press “We are very pleased to be able to start rolling out this exciting new service. These important changes mean we will be able to recycle significantly more, save resources, and work together even more effectively to protect the environment for the future.” Nick and Steve
