CLUB, SOCIETY AND VILLAGE REPORTS
Great Mongeham Society
Could You Be A Medieval? Alex and Pam Summers,
20th October 2011. The evening's interestingly entitled lecture was
presented as a quiz covering all aspects of medieval life. We learned that
an "ale passion" was a hangover, that a "hussy" was a good housewife, but
the meaning has changed since then, that the traditional thing to do on the
20th of December was to plant your onions, whilst on Shrove Tuesday priests
and pious men would shave and cut there hair and that a "baxter" was a
female baker, the women tending to specialize in cakes and pastries. The
medieval period between the black death which caused the demise of half the
population of England and the invention of printing, saw the end of
feudalism and the rise of landless workers able to demand wages.
The Christmas decorations will be put up in the Parish Hall on Sunday November 27th for all to enjoy. PSB
The Harvest Supper held in the Parish Hall on Saturday, 1st October was a good fun evening with plenty of food and light entertainment afterwards. Although numbers were down on last year, we still raised £200 profit which was shared equally between the local hospice and our link in Madagascar. Many thanks to those who kindly donated raffle prizes, helped prepare the food and waited at the tables during the evening. PH
Queen’s Diamond Jubilee as part of Great Mongeham celebrations, your Parish Council is looking into presenting village children of school age and under with a specially minted celebratory coin. Please remember to fill in and return the enclosed flyer as soon as possible. PH
