CLUB, SOCIETY AND VILLAGE REPORTS Great Mongeham Society Carols on the Green Those of you who were at the inaugural Carols on the Green event just before Christmas must surely agree with me that it was a resounding success. More than eighty people gathered round the tree and sang lustily to the accompaniment of St. Martin’s Church’s latest acquisition, a music machine! After singing our hearts out we all trooped in to the Parish Hall where we were entertained by the St. Martin’s Hand Bell Ringers while enjoying warm mulled wine and mince pies. Even the weather was on our side and we all agreed that we should do the same next year. Thanks to the Parish Council for initiating the event, Brian for the tree, David and Co. for putting it up, Peter for providing the music and to Diana and Patricia for organising the refreshments. JR

Great Mongeham Society 19 January, 2012 Members attending the first meeting of the new year were educated, informed and entertained by the guest speaker Ralph Hault. He learned photography whilst serving in the RAF and on returning home opened a photography shop in Ramsgate which he ran successfully for over 30 years. During this time he began with the help of local people, to build his collection of over 3000 images of old Ramsgate which provides the basis for his talks. He has been very active in the civic life of the town and the relatively short trip down memory lane that he was able to present on the evening concentrated on the seafront. He evoked a wonderfully nostalgic sense of life between the wars and the fun to be had on a traditional British seaside holiday, of the kind that many of the audience had actually experienced.

The Jan Anton Dancers have enjoyed another year of high achievement. The latest results from the examinations in November were outstanding all in the top two categories of Distinctions and Honours. These exams were taken in Classical Ballet, Tap, Modern Technique, Jazz Performance and Acrobatics. The youngest student was just 3 years old on the day. The senior class have just finished a highly successful Pantomime season with the New Ash Players, where they played to packed houses every night, including an extra Sunday matinee performance. Jan Anton has just begun a new Baby Movement class at Great Mongeham Parish Hall for the under 5's, this will include first steps of Ballet, Mime, Exercise and some really fun action to music. This class is every Friday at 4pm. to 4.40pm. The highlight of this year will be the Annual Show TOTALLY DANCE TWO at the Astor Theatre, Deal on June 10th. If you would like to chat to Jan about Childrens or Adult classes including Keep-Fit for Life on Monday mornings please ring. 07760150233 or to Email
At the Saint Martins WI January meeting the speaker was Sarah Grazebrook who enthralled the members on how she became an author and wrote her book Crooked Pieces. that, while the offer by Central
Government for an additional 2.5% to the Revenue Support Grant, settlement
to local authorities would give a 0% rate increase this year, and may seem
attractive, there is a concern that this will create a hole in future years,
as the offer is a one-off contribution. Dover is one of the lowest taxing
authorities in Kent with a band D rate of £158.94.
We will take advice on this dilemma in
order to achieve the best outcome for our rate payers.
On a local level Nick and Steve are keen
to help residents with queries relating to the council’s services. We look
to maintain our strong links with the parish council and other community
organisations. Nick and Steve
